Félix Azara realizó el Diario de reconocimiento de guardias y fortines que guarnecÃan la lÃnea de frontera de Buenos Aires a pedido de Melo de Portugal, con quien habÃa mantenido una buena relación durante su larga estancia en el Paraguay cuando éste era por entonces su gobernador.
La máxima autoridad del virreinato del RÃo de la Plata, por medio del oficio del 29 de Febrero de 1796, exponÃa los motivos de la misión y las plazas que componÃan la expedición:
...procédase a hacer un prolijo reconocimiento de toda la frontera y sitios más adecuados a fundar las poblaciones según lo mandado por Su Majestad, a cuyo fin comisiono, con todas las facultades respectivas, al Capitán de NavÃo de la Real Armada, don Félix de Azara, en calidad de Comandante General de esta expedición...
Concretamente, la expedición duró desde el 17 de marzo al 24 de abril de 1796, o sea, cuarenta y cuatro dÃas, e hizo el periplo siguiente: Buenos Aires (puente de Márquez, San Isidro), Guardia de Luján-FortÃn de Areco, Guardia de Salto-Fuerte de Rojas-FortÃn de Mercedes (Cabeza de Tigre, Santa Fe), FortÃn de Melincué (Santa Fe) y de allà durante dieciocho dÃas siguiendo casi siempre la lÃnea del rÃo Salado hasta la Guarda de Chascomús para seguir el derrotero hasta la Guardua de Ranchos-Guardia del Monte FortÃn de Lobos y por último el FortÃn Navarro.
En el Diario de reconocimiento de guardias y fortines Azara señalaba que la polÃtica en relación a la frontera debÃa ir de la mano de una polÃtica de poblamiento para que de esa manera, con una eficaz defensa de los aborÃgenes de la región, fuera aprovechable la riqueza de la campaña, la protección de las haciendas y de la capital del virreinato rioplatense.
