Con el siglo XIX se abrió el mundo occidental a drásticas transformaciones. En Europa se vive el ocaso de las monarquÃas absolutas y el nacimiento de las democracias censitarias y en la América hispánica se desarrollan los movimientos de independencia sobre la monarquÃa española y la apertura a otras realidades polÃticas, económicas, culturales e ideológicas. La Iglesia católica vive una de sus más grandes crisis con los procesos de secularización que la quieren reubicar bajo el contexto de la formación de los Estados nacionales, mientras que los movimientos evangélicos y protestantes encuentran nuevos cauces para la expansión de sus doctrinas. México no es ajeno a esas transformaciones y movilizaciones.
Este libro propone el rescate e interpretación de un diálogo y debate que se suscitó a lo largo del siglo XIX en diversos sectores de la sociedad mexicana en torno al lugar que debÃa ocupar la religión en general y el catolicismo o el cristianismo en particular en la construcción del Estado nacional y en la formación cultural de la sociedad mexicana. A través de la revisión de un conjunto de lecturas evangélicas y protestantes -que va desde los textos bÃblicos, una amplia folleterÃa y la prensa- podemos observar el recorrido del pensamiento religioso de diversos grupos de una nación que se asimilaban en su origen profundamente como católicos, pero que al paso del tiempo, con la entrada de impresos y pensadores que proponÃan una manera distinta de entender y practicar el cristianismo comenzaron a debatir y cuestionar la tradición cultural practicada antes de la independencia nacional.
En ese recorrido a través de la circulación de impresos y la lectura que de ellos hizo la sociedad mexicana podemos ver la construcción de varios movimientos evangélicos y protestantes en el paÃs, uno de ellos, representado por la Iglesia Mexicana de Jesús, nos ilustra la forma en que algunas mexicanas y mexicanos se vieron atraÃdos por la reconstrucción de una religiosidad cristiana nacional más apegada a los orÃgenes del cristianismo primitivo.
