La oposición entre Oriente y Occidente, conducida a sus términos más simples, es en el fondo idéntica a la que frecuentemente gusta establecer entre la contemplación y la acción. Nos hemos ya explicado sobre ello en muchas ocasiones, y hemos examinado los diferentes puntos de vista en que uno puede colocarse para considerar las relaciones de esos dos términos. Son verdaderamente dos contrarios, o no serÃan mas bien dos complementarios, o bien no habrÃa, en realidad, entre uno y otro una relación, no de coordinación sino de subordinación? No haremos pues aquà mas que resumir muy rápidamente tales consideraciones, indispensables para quien quiera comprender el EspÃritu de Oriente en general y el de la India en particular.
El punto de vista que consiste en oponer pura y simplemente una a otra la contemplación y la acción es el más exterior y el más superficial de todos. La oposición existe en las apariencias, pero no puede ser absolutamente irreductible; por otra parte, se podrÃa decir otro tanto para todos los contrarios, que cesan de ser tales desde que uno se eleva por encima de cierto nivel, aquel donde su oposición mantiene toda su realidad.
Quien dice oposición o contraste dice, por ello mismo, desarmonÃa o desequilibrio, es decir, algo que no puede existir mas que bajo un punto de vista particular y limitado; en el conjunto de las cosas, el equilibrio está hecho de la suma de todos los desequilibrios, y todos los desordenes parciales concurren de grado o por fuerza al orden total.
Considerando la contemplación y la acción como complementarias, nos emplazamos en un punto de vista ya más profundo y más verdadero que el precedente, porque la oposición se encuentra ya ahà conciliada y resuelta, sus dos términos equilibrándose en cierto modo el uno por el otro. Se tratarÃa entonces de dos elementos igualmente necesarios que se completan y se apoyan mutuamente, y que constituyen la doble actividad, interior y exterior, de un solo y mismo ser, ya sea cada hombre tomado en particular o la humanidad considerada colectivamente.
