Antes de abordar el estudio de la TrÃada extremo oriental, conviene ponerse cuidadosamente en guardia contra las confusiones y las falsas asimilaciones que tienen generalmente curso en Occidente, y que provienen sobre todo de que en todo ternario tradicional, cualesquiera que sea, se quiere encontrar un equivalente más o menos exacto de la Trinidad cristiana.
Este error no es solo cosa de teólogos, que serÃan todavÃa excusables de querer reducirlo todo asà a su punto de vista especial; lo que es más singular, es que es cometido incluso por gentes que son extrañas u hostiles a toda religión, comprendido el Cristianismo, pero que, debido al medio donde viven, conocen a pesar de todo a éste más que a las demás formas tradicionales (lo que, por lo demás, no quiere decir que le comprendan mucho mejor en el fondo), y que, por consiguiente, hacen de él más o menos inconscientemente una suerte de término de comparación al que buscan reducir todo lo demás.
Entre todos los ejemplos que se podrÃan dar de estas asimilaciones abusivas, uno de aquellos que se encuentran más frecuentemente es el que concierne a la Trimûrti hindú, a la cual se da incluso corrientemente el nombre de ''Trinidad'', nombre que, al contrario, para evitar toda equivocación, es indispensable reservar en exclusiva a la concepción cristiana a la que siempre ha estado destinado a designar propiamente.
En realidad, en los dos casos, se trata muy evidentemente de un conjunto de tres aspectos divinos, pero a eso se limita toda la semejanza; puesto que estos aspectos no son de ninguna manera los mismos por una parte y por otra, y puesto que su distinción no responde de ninguna manera al mismo punto de vista, es completamente imposible hacer corresponder respectivamente los tres términos de uno de estos dos ternarios a los del otro.
