Pain is part of life-but life isn't only about pain. Our mission is to help others find hope that might seem lost in their darkest hours. Chaplaincy involves reaching out without expecting anything in return. It's about making that call when nobody else does. It's about caring for people well beyond the gates of the church, especially when they feel unseen, forgotten, or trapped by their emotional or spiritual pain.
People dealing with depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, or stress often feel like they're stuck in a maze with no way out. One reason for this is that they view their situation subjectively- from the inside, influenced by fear, emotion, and personal history. When overwhelmed, we become controlled by our pain, which distorts our view and narrows our focus.
That's where the chaplain's role becomes crucial. We are not there to be overwhelmed by their suffering but to be present alongside it. This helps us stay objective-the ability to see the bigger picture without becoming emotionally overwhelmed. We don't carry their pain, but we help carry them. By walking with the wounded, we help them regain perspective, dignity, and hope. We don't have all the answers-we offer presence, peace, and patient companionship. Proverbs 11:25 NIV reminds us of our mission: A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
