Periodista, narrador y poeta, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870) es una de las figuras más importantes de la literatura española. Su extensa prosa se destaca, al igual que su poesÃa, por la gran musicalidad y la sencillez de la expresión, cargada de sensibilidad.
La inmensa fama literaria de Bécquer se sustenta en sus Leyendas, pero sobre todo en sus Rimas, que iniciaron la corriente romántica de poesÃa intimista opuesta a la retórica y ampulosidad con la que se suele asociar el movimiento. Su lÃrica ejerció un fuerte influjo en figuras como Rubén DarÃo, Antonio Machado y Juan Ramón Jiménez, y se lo juzga el iniciador de la poesÃa contemporánea en idioma español, por lo que su estudio es obligado en España e Hispanoamérica por igual.

Often compared to Edgar Allan Poe, his natural style influenced Rubén DarÃo, Antonio Machado and Juan Ramón Jiménez, among others.
