En El lirismo en la poesÃa francesa y en otras publicaciones suyas, Emilia Pardo Bazán hace un recorrido que permite abordar los precursores del simbolismo como VÃctor Hugo, Gautier o Baudelaire, hasta llegar al encuentro de los autores que estuvieron influidos por
este movimiento estético como Mallarmé, Rimbaud, Verlaine, Wilde, Maetterlinck o aquellos que con su esencia partieron hacia nuevos rumbos como Joris-Karl Huysmans.
Cabe citar a la autora para entender su punto de vista:
No es lo mismo lo contemporáneo que lo moderno. Entre ambos conceptos existe una notable diferencia. Lo moderno es necesariamente contemporáneo; pero lo contemporáneo no es moderno muchas veces. Es lo contemporáneo, en arte y literatura, lo que se produce en nuestros tiempos, y nuestros tiempos, para este caso, no son únicamente el dÃa de hoy, ni el plazo de nuestro vivir, sino una época dada, que claramente señalan y limitan grandes acontecimientos y desarrollos de la evolución artÃstica y literaria. Para nosotros, lo contemporáneo empieza en el romanticismo; y, sin embargo, al romanticismo, actualmente, nadie le da el dictado de moderno. Empieza en el romanticismo de escuela: no en el de tendencia universal, casi tan antiguo como el mundo.
Si me atengo a la definición corriente en diccionarios, verbigracia el de RodrÃguez Navas, que por su tamaño fácilmente manejable suelo consultar, contemporáneo es lo que existe al mismo tiempo que alguna persona o cosa. Admitida literalmente la definición, nos encontrarÃamos con muchas dificultades. Yo supongo que lo contemporáneo es aquà lo que desde el romanticismo se cuenta, y que, por tanto, puedo dar a lo rigurosamente actual su filiación y sus antecedentes, enlazarlo con su ascendencia, y aun remontarme a sus orÃgenes algo más distantes, en la medida que convenga para facilitar la comprensión del tema, y con la rapidez que impone lo que, aunque conveniente, es a la postre secundario.
