Medulla Oblongata, el primer libro de Kelly Martínez-Grandal, recoge quince poemas escritos entre el 2005 y el 2015, en una edición bilingüe, traducida por la reconocida poeta norteamericana Margaret Randall. Toma su título de un órgano, la médula oblonga, que conecta el tronco encefálico con la espina dorsal. De ella dependen la transmisión de los impulsos sensoriales y motores al cerebro, la respiración, los latidos, la presión sanguínea, la digestión; un pequeño centro en nosotros desde donde se desprende la vida, activado también por las cantidades de oxígeno que entran a nuestro cuerpo y los estados emocionales.Acompañados por las ilustraciones de Ivette Díaz, estos poemas son -precisamente-, una indagación en todo aquello que se constituye como centro de vida de la escritora, en su médula oblonga: ancestros, exilio, arquetipos, sentido del yo, infancia. Por encima de todo, un reconocimiento de la escritura como órgano necesario para existir; como oxígeno, latido, alimento. Textos que viven dentro de un tiempo particular, en el que pasado, presente y futuro se unen en una sola y laberíntica voz. Tal vez porque, como señala Randall, también a cargo del prólogo: El tiempo deja de ser lineal cuando los eventos políticos y sociales obligan a emigrar. El viaje de Kelly desde Cuba a Venezuela y luego a Estados Unidos, es reflejo de eso que viven tantos en estos tiempos. Es, también, únicamente suyo.Es fuera de ese viaje que Kelly ha tejido estas líneas: hilos que se ciernen entre el desvelo y el sueño, moviéndose dentro y fuera de una canción sensual, una dura necesidad. Sus palabras, como las de todo exiliado, a veces están confinadas y otras veces vuelan libres (...) He aquí a una poeta de voz inusual y convincente. Medulla Oblongata, Kelly Martínez-Grandal's debut book, compiles fifteen poems written between 2005 and 2015 in a bilingual edition translated by the renowned American writer Margaret Randall. It borrows its title from an organ: the medulla, that connects the brainstem to the backbone. The transmission of the sensitive and motor impulses between the medulla and the brain depends on it. It also controls breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure and digestion; a little core in us from which life emerges and it's also activated by the quantities of oxygen in our bodies and our emotional moods. Accompanied by the illustrations of Ivette Díaz, these poems are precisely an indagation in everything that constitutes as center of the writer's psychic life, in her medulla: ancestors, exile, archetypes, Self, chilhood. Above all, writing as an essential organ to exist; as oxygen, heartbeat, nourishment. Texts that live inside a particular time in which past, present and future flows into a laberynthic single voice. Maybe it is because, as Randall, who is also in charge of the prologue, says: Time ceases to be linear when social and political events force emigration. Kelly's journey from Cuba to Venezuela and finally to the United States mirrors that of so many in these times. It is also uniquely her own.It is out of this journey that Kelly has woven these lines: threads hovering between wakefulness and dream, moving in and out of sensuous song and tough necessity. Her words, like those of every exile, are confined at times and at other times fly free (...) Here is a poet of unusual and compelling voice.
