He tomado como tema de esta exposición la metafÃsica oriental; quizás habrÃa valido más decir simplemente la metafÃsica sin epÃteto, ya que, en verdad, la metafÃsica pura, al estar por esencia fuera y más allá de todas las formas y de todas las contingencias, no es ni oriental ni occidental, es universal. Son sólo las formas exteriores de las que es revestida por las necesidades de una exposición, para expresar lo que es expresable de ella, son estas formas las que pueden ser ya sea orientales, ya sea occidentales; pero, bajo su diversidad, es un fondo idéntico el que se encuentra por todas partes y siempre, por todas partes al menos donde hay metafÃsica verdadera, y eso por la simple razón de que la verdad es una.
Entre las grandes figuras de la edad media, hay pocas cuyo estudio sea más propio que la de San Bernardo, para disipar algunos prejuicios queridos del espÃritu moderno. Qué hay, en efecto, más desconcertante para este espÃritu que ver a un puro contemplativo, que ha querido ser y permanecer siempre tal, llamado a desempeñar un papel preponderante en la dirección de los asuntos de la Iglesia y del Estado, y que triunfa frecuentemente allà donde habÃa fracasado toda la prudencia de los polÃticos y de los diplomáticos de profesión? Qué hay más sorprendente e incluso más paradójico, según la manera ordinaria de juzgar las cosas, que un mÃstico que no siente más que desdén para lo que llama «las argucias de Platón y las sutilezas de Aristóteles , y que triunfa no obstante sin esfuerzo sobre los más sutiles dialécticos de su tiempo? Toda la vida de San Bernardo podrÃa parecer destinada a mostrar, por un ejemplo brillante, que existen, para resolver los problemas del orden intelectual e incluso los de orden práctico, otros medios que aquellos a los que se está habituado desde hace mucho tiempo a considerar como los únicos eficaces, sin duda porque son los únicos al alcance de una sabidurÃa puramente humana, que no es ni siquiera la sombra de la verdadera sabidurÃa.
