Son historias de mujeres singulares a las que intenté entender. Las hay generosas y las hay malvadas, cobardes o valientes, turbulentas o tÃmidas; todas son, eso sÃ, muy originales y algunas resultan pasmosas por lo extraordinario de sus peripecias. Pero creo que, por muy raras que parezcan, siempre podemos reconocernos en ellas. Y es que cada uno de nosotros encierra dentro de sà todas las vidas.

This book compiles an expanded version of the biographies of women that I published in the Sunday supplement of El PaÃs. I don't really know how to define these works: although they are very well documented, they are neither academic biographies nor journalistic articles, but rather are impassioned, personal texts. They are stories of unique women whom I tried to understand. Some are generous while others are evil, cowardly or brave, turbulent or timid; all of them, however, are very original and some seem astonishing due to their extraordinary circumstances. But I believe that, no matter how odd they seem, we can always recognize ourselves in them. Each one of us holds inside us the lives of all others. -Rosa Montero
