El Popol Vuh tiene un indudable interés literario, por su rica imaginerÃa y por ser una obra que contempla la cultura maya preexistente.
El Popol Vuh que hoy conocemos fue escrito tras la Conquista en lengua quiché con grafÃa castellana por indÃgenas cristianizados.
Algunos estudiosos indican que uno de los posibles autores del Popol Vuh es Diego Reinoso. Y se cree que se redactó entre 1554 y 1558, en la antigua capital de los quichés, Gumarkaaj (Utatlán), hoy Santa Cruz del Quiché, o en Chuilá (Chichicastenango), pueblo en que vivieron los sobrevivientes de la nobleza quiché tras su derrota por Pedro de Alvarado.
Este libro relata la lucha de los mellizos Hunahpú e Ixbalanqué (los gemelos civilizadores) contra los gigantes Vucub Caquix.
Dentro de este planteamiento general, el libro se inicia con la creación y el origen del hombre, surgido a partir del maÃz. Después se introduce en la epopeya de los semidioses Hunahpú e Ixbalanqué, los cuales se convertirán en el Sol y la Luna al dar término a su gesta. A continuación el pueblo quiché se extiende, sometiendo a sus vecinos.
Una tercera parte ofrece una descripción de las dinastÃas y los dioses. Luego aparece una crónica más histórica sobre el origen y la estructura de los pueblos indÃgenas de Guatemala. También se refieren los sucesos recientes que les afectaron, incluida la conquista por los españoles hacia 1524.
La historia de cómo el libro se conservó está llena de vericuetos. En 1701 llegó a Chichicastenango el sacerdote dominico Francisco Jiménez, quien aprendió varios idiomas indÃgenas y transcribió el Manuscrito del Popol Vuh al español.
En 1829 los dominicos fueron expulsados del paÃs durante el gobierno liberal de Francisco Morazán, y sus archivos pasaron a la Universidad de San Carlos. En 1854 un médico austriaco residente en Guatemala, Carl Scherzer, tuvo acceso al Manuscrito de Jiménez, y lo publicó en 1857 en Viena.
Ese mismo año el abate francés Charles Etienne Brasseur de Bourbourg, llevó el Manuscrito a ParÃs y lo publicó en francés en 1861. A la muerte de Brasseur el Manuscrito pasó a manos de Alphonse Pinart, quien luego lo vendió por 10.000 francos.
En 1887 Edward Everett Ayer lo adquirió en una subasta. Luego lo donó a la biblioteca de la Universidad de Newberry, en Chicago, donde aún se encuentra.
La primera edición moderna del Popol Vuh es de 1947 y su traductor es Adrián Recinos.
