Aunque el presente estudio pueda parecer, a primera vista al menos, no tener mas que un carácter un poco especial, nos ha parecido útil emprenderle para precisar y explicar más completamente algunas nociones a las que nos ha sucedido hacer llamada en las diversas ocasiones en las que nos hemos servido del simbolismo matemático, y esta razón bastarÃa en suma para justificarle sin que haya lugar a insistir más en ello.
No obstante, debemos decir que a eso se agregan también otras razones secundarias, que conciernen sobre todo a lo que se podrÃa llamar el lado histórico de la cuestión; en efecto, éste no está enteramente desprovisto de interés desde nuestro punto de vista, en el sentido de que todas las discusiones que se han suscitado sobre el tema de la naturaleza y del valor del cálculo infinitesimal ofrecen un ejemplo contundente de esa ausencia de principios que caracteriza a las ciencias profanas, es decir, las únicas ciencias que los modernos conocen y que incluso conciben como posibles.
Ya hemos hecho observar frecuentemente que la mayorÃa de esas ciencias, en la medida incluso en que corresponden todavÃa a alguna realidad, no representan nada más que simples residuos desnaturalizados de algunas de las antiguas ciencias tradicionales: es la parte más inferior de éstas, la que, habiendo cesado de ser puesta en relación con los principios, y habiendo perdido por eso su verdadera significación original, ha acabado por tomar un desarrollo independiente y por ser considerada como un conocimiento que se basta a sà mismo, aunque, ciertamente, su valor propio como conocimiento, precisamente por eso mismo, se encuentra reducido a casi nada.
