Progne y Filomena se encuentra en la Primera Parte de las comedias de Rojas Zorrilla. La obra se representó por primera vez en el Palacio Real el 10 de enero de 1636, por la compañía de Juan Martínez de los Ríos.
Varios son los aspectos del mito de Progne y Filomena, procedente del libro VI de las Metamorfosis de Ovidio, en los que el argumento se separa de las fuentes latinas.
Al margen de que en la conformación clásica del mito Hipólito no sea hermano de Tereo sino uno de sus hijos -confusión, no obstante, que incrementa la tensión dramática al presentar un rival amoroso inexistente en las primeras versiones del relato- Rojas desestima los detalles más tremendistas narrados por Ovidio:
por un lado, en la comedia áurea Filomena es simplemente herida en la lengua y no se le arranca de cuajo con unas tenazas como sucede en el mito de Ovidio
por otro, desaparece el episodio de la muerte de Ithis.
De igual modo Rojas evita toda referencia final a la transformación de las protagonistas.
