Venero a Rómulo Betancourt porque tuvo el valor de enfrentar exitosamente a quienes quisieron derrumbarlo para establecer en el país un gobierno semejante al de la Cuba fidelista, por su enfrentamiento a las dictaduras de los generales Juan Vicente Gómez y Marcos Pérez Jiménez, por haber echado bases firmes para el establecimiento de la democracia y la modernidad, por su probidad en el manejo de los recursos públicos, por la firmeza que demostró en la defensa de sus principios y la valentía que tuvo para rectificar cuando sus colaboradores le demostraron que estaba equivocado; por la Doctrina Betancourt que más tarde adoptó la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) para cerrarles el paso a las dictaduras de toda laya en Latinoamérica y por haber sido un venezolano excepcional que creyó realmente en el diálogo entre opuestos para encontrar un punto de equilibrio que facilitara la convivencia de ambas posiciones.
Hace algunos años Virgilio Ávila Vivas, siendo gobernador de Nueva Esparta, me propuso que escribiera un libro sobre Rómulo Betancourt, a lo cual gentilmente me negué porque entonces carecía de las herramientas metodológicas adecuadas para llevar a feliz término esa tarea, máxime si escritores de la talla del profesor Manuel Caballero, Carlos Gotberg, Naudy Suárez y Juan Liscano habían estudiado profundamente la vida y obra de este genial venezolano.
Él no tuvo ocaso y su obra, por extraordinaria, no murió con el 28 de septiembre de 1981 sino que, al contrario, creció con los años, tanto que las dos dictaduras gobernantes en el país desde 1999 hasta 2013 y desde esta última fecha hasta mayo de 2020, dirigida la primera por el teniente coronel (retirado) Hugo Chávez Frías y la segunda, por un conductor del Metro de Caracas con fama de reposero, no han podido destruirla, menos todavía la esencia democrática que regó en los venezolanos para defender sus derechos.
Estos dos siniestros personajes borraron sus datos biográficos de la cronología venezolana, del parque del Este, construido bajo su gobierno, de la autopista de Oriente y de otros sitios para condenar al olvido por quien es considerado el hombre que sembró el espíritu democrático en Venezuela desde la remota Junta Revolucionaria de Gobierno de octubre de 1945, a pesar del origen golpista de la misma.
