Un retrato de la lucha centroamericana y fronteriza desde la perspectiva de su protagonista, Mel y una familia nicaragüense dispersa en Baja y el sur de California, asà como en la Ciudad de México, Minneapolis y Managua. Esta segunda edición revisada extiende el uso de los grabados evocativos del artista nicaragǖense de Chicago, Carlos Barberena; pero ahora añade lo que no se incluyó en la primera edición (2018): un tratamiento de los primeros meses de la Revolución Sandinista, y una toma de posición del autor sobre la situación contemporánea en Nicaragua.
El Libro I presenta un modo narrativo de múltiples voces que recuerda a As I Lay Dying de William Faulkner para seguir la creciente relación de Mel con Lena, una mujer nicaragüense que busca recuperar a su hijo menor secuestrado por su exmarido. Tenemos un retrata de una lucha por el desarrollo personal, profesional y polÃtico, asà como el precio pagado por todos los involucrados durante la dictadura somocista y la revolución sandinista. El Libro II destaca a los miembros de la familia que Mel conoce a través de Lena: su tÃo y madre sandinistas participando en actividades subversivas en la frontera; su tÃa luchando por mantener unida a la familia de su hijo mientras se desintegra en L.A. El chico fronterizo retrata al hijo mayor de Lena, Silvio, moviéndose de un lugar a otro, manteniendo sus lazos con su madre y con Mel incluso después de que la pareja se separara. Lena aparece para criticar la apropiación de Mel de la historia de su familia. Un epÃlogo llamativo evoca John Keats, F. Scott Fitzgerald y Ernest Hemingway para darnos una versión inesperada y nicaragüense del sueño americano en el contexto de la Revolución Sandinista y la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos.
Sandino en la frontera es un ejemplo creativo de las ficciones de memorias del autor -historias que surgen de la memoria, pero organizadas y confeccionadas como cuentos y novelas. Todo esto en una traducción brillante por Marisabel MartÃn Córdova que nos da una versión concisa y dramática de una historia que el autor cuenta con minucioso detalle en Managua, Mon Amour (Nevermore), pero aquà como parte de una historia más concentrada que se centra en la historia de un niño perdido y sus familiares.
