En 1958, los cubanos querÃan un cambio. No era la primera vez, ya lo venÃan haciendo sucesivamente desde 1868. Los cambios hasta ese momento nunca fueron radicales, nunca cambiaron la esencia de su modo de vida, aunque sÃ, a veces, la forma de ejercer la polÃtica. En ese año de 1958, Cuba era un paÃs con un régimen con derechos polÃticos restringidos, libertad de prensa, libertad económica y libre movilidad social. La economÃa crecÃa a niveles nunca vistos, y la isla era autosuficiente en su funcionamiento. ExistÃa pobreza, mucha; existÃa riqueza también. La restauración pacÃfica hacia la democracia plena iba por buen camino, pero los cubanos querÃan un cambio.
El 1 de enero de 1959, cuando triunfó la revolución, Fidel Castro les ofreció ese cambio, y unos meses después comenzó a ejercer su poder para cumplirlo. En este libro, el historiador y empresario Omar Sixto narra los primeros -y contundentes- pasos de aquel cambio, que el 1 de enero de 2025 cumplió sus sesenta y seis años, cerrando un 2024 marcado por una inflación sin precedentes y la consecuente caÃda del poder adquisitivo de la población, además de sucesivos colapsos de la red eléctrica nacional.
Algunos paÃses se han aplicado sus propios cambios; otros se aprestan a hacerlo, sin tomar en cuenta la experiencia de Cuba, o tal vez creyendo que a ellos no les sucederá igual. Ojalá este libro sirva para abrirles los ojos a quienes todavÃa están a tiempo de dar un paso atrás.
