La comedia El vergonzoso en palacio de Tirso de Molina fue una de las tres obras de teatro incluidas en Los cigarrales de Toledo, publicado, según la primera edición conocida, en 1624.
El vergonzoso en palacio es una comedia pura. En ella la princesa Madalena se las ingenia para conducir a su humilde y tÃmido amante, don DionÃs, a que se le declare. Éste, que se hace pasar por maestro de caligrafÃa, llegará a hacerlo después de varias peripecias.
En una de ellas, ante la llegada de su amado, la princesa hace como si durmiera y hablara con él en sueños. Evidencia asà su felicidad por tener su compañÃa. Luego, al despertar, finge no recordar lo dicho en absoluto, lo que deja al vergonzoso galán el camino libre para vencer su temor y para declarársele.
Luego, la intervención de la hermana de Madalena creará nuevas confusiones al hacer creer a ésta que don DionÃs está enamorado de ella. En El vergonzoso en palacio todo se resuelve al saberse que a quien ama la hermana es a su propia imagen con vestuario de hombre, y que el falso maestro de caligrafÃa es, en realidad, un prÃncipe.
