St. Scholastica is a revered saint in the Catholic Church, known for her deep faith, piety, and dedication to a monastic life. Born around 480 AD in Nursia, Italy, into a noble family, Scholastica is the twin sister of St. Benedict, the father of Western monasticism. The siblings shared a close bond, rooted in their mutual love for God and commitment to a life of prayer and service.
From a young age, Scholastica demonstrated a strong inclination towards spirituality and religious life. Together with her brother Benedict, she founded the women's branch of the Benedictine monastic movement, significantly contributing to the spread of monasticism throughout Europe. She established a convent near Monte Cassino, where Benedict had founded his monastery. This close proximity allowed the siblings to maintain their spiritual connection and seek each other's counsel.
St. Scholastica is often depicted in religious art holding a dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit and representing a miraculous event associated with her life. One of the most famous stories about St. Scholastica is her last meeting with her brother. During their final encounter, Scholastica sensed her time on earth was ending and asked Benedict to stay with her through the night. When Benedict refused, adhering to his monastic discipline, Scholastica prayed fervently, and a sudden storm broke out, preventing Benedict from leaving. They spent the night in deep conversation and prayer. Three days later, Scholastica passed away, and Benedict saw her soul ascending to heaven in the form of a dove.
St. Scholastica is celebrated for her unwavering faith, her powerful intercessory prayers, and her role as a model of Christian monasticism. Her feast day is observed on February 10th, and she is the patron saint of nuns, education, and convulsive children.
