A Supplication for the Beggars is a book written by Simon Fish, published in 1529. It is a satirical work that criticizes the corruption and greed of the Catholic Church during the early 16th century. The book takes the form of a petition from the beggars of England to the King, asking him to put an end to the practices of the Church that have led to poverty and suffering among the people. The petition highlights the extravagance of the Church, including the lavish lifestyles of the clergy and the excessive spending on religious ceremonies and artifacts. Fish also criticizes the Church's practice of selling indulgences, which were supposed to grant forgiveness of sins but were often used as a means of raising money. The book was highly controversial at the time and was banned by the Church. However, it played an important role in the growing movement for religious reform that would eventually lead to the Protestant Reformation.1529.
