Poems can be explicit or like whispered secrets, a combination of fiction and profound truths. Poems can sometimes tell a simple story, in clear language, or they can imply, with subtle hints, what the meaning is - which is not always clear, even to the poet. Many times, poetry is the language of the subconscious, exploring its depths, and retrieving bits and pieces from dark pits of necessity, to shared light. Porty Potty Blues is a book of poetry that encompasses all these definitions. Many of the poems can be described as observational. Simple, clear, understandable. Others, well, the subconscious speaks its own language, and at best, can only be interpreted. Some people complain when a poem is too simple, too understandable. Then, they say, it is not real poetry. The more obtuse, the vaguer, so seems the argument, the more real poetry is. Interesting. But for me, poetry is poetry. Poetry is to be read, spoken, appreciated, however it is presented. The poems in this volume tend to be comprised of a blues flavour, with elements of melancholy, or just plain old pissed off sadness: a combination of anger, irritability, and frustration, with feelings of dejection and hopelessness: poems with a sense of reality. Hard times can be made easier if shared; shared pain is pain divided. But pain doesn't just go away. Sometimes it lingers. Here, have some pain. Read at your own risk.
