The desire to craft the history of Ayya Vaikundar into a novel took deep root in my mind many years ago. I was captivated by the life of this magnificent personality, who ignited a massive revolution in the socio-spiritual landscape of Southern Tamil Nadu, and by the unique philosophies of 'Ayyavazhi' that he established.
I was particularly struck by the relevance of his message to the modern world: his voice ringing out for the liberation and self-respect of the oppressed amidst the cruel caste oppression of the 19th century; his teachings emphasizing equality, fraternity, and Dharma; and his spiritual vision that urged people to seek the Divine within themselves, eschewing idol worship.
While studying 'Akilathirattu Ammanai, ' the holy scripture of Ayyavazhi, my imagination was stirred by its epic quality-spanning from the genesis of the cosmos to the history of the Yugas, the purpose of the Vaikunda Avatar, and the eternal struggle between the evil force of Kali and Dharma.
It was this fascination, combined with a burning desire to share Ayya's life and message with a wider audience, that set me on this literary journey.
His teaching, Protecting the downtrodden is Dharma, continues to resonate today as a clarion call for social justice. His exhortation to the people to live with self-respect and without fear underscores the importance of individual human dignity.
