TerezÃn, the Theresienstadt concentration camp, memorializes the triumph of the human spirit.
During World War II, the Gestapo transformed TerezÃn into Theresienstadt, a ghetto and concentration camp. Jews from Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Denmark were imprisoned there. Despite the suffering, concerts and education continued under a Jewish governing group. Artists like Bedřich Fritta and Norbert Troller worked alongside conductor Karel Ančerl, cantor Karl Fischer, and composer Viktor Ullmann.
