Published in January 1776, Common Sense transformed growing colonial resistance into a clear demand for American independence, attacking monarchy and hereditary rule while arguing for republican self-government. Paine continued his defense of the Revolution in The American Crisis, a series of essays written during the darkest years of the war to strengthen public resolve and the morale of the Continental Army. In Rights of Man, published in two parts in 1791 and 1792, he defended the French Revolution, representative democracy, and the principle that legitimate governments exist to protect the natural rights of their citizens.
Paine brought the same fearless independence to religion and economic inequality. In The Age of Reason, he explains his deist belief in a creator revealed through reason and the natural world while challenging organized religion, priestly authority, miracles, and claims of divine revelation. Agrarian Justice argues that private ownership of land deprives people of a shared natural inheritance and proposes payments to the young and elderly funded through an inheritance tax on landed property. Together, these works reveal Paine as a radical advocate of liberty whose ideas about democracy, human rights, freedom of conscience, and social responsibility remain provocative and influential.
