This book is a collection of memories and anecdotes about Dr Sione Mangisi who was one of the first Tongans to be trained in Western medicine at the Central School of Medicine in Suva, Fiji. He graduated in 1938, the fifth Tongan to complete the four-year study program and the eighth overall to graduate. Then, as they all did at the time, he returned to Tonga to serve his community. This was an initiative set in place by the Tongan government after the 1919-1920 flu epidemic that devastated families on every island in the Kingdom. Tongan doctors would enable Tonga to manage its own health needs. The book is based on interviews and conversations with those people who remember him and his work, including colleagues, neighbours, extended family and his adult children. It is an anthology of their memories of Mangisi's life and service.
