A Translation of the New Philadelphia is the final movement of Pax Dominica: Refusal to Mourn, a work that stretches the ancient myth of Europa riding a white bull across the Mediterranean Sea to the historic migration of Europeans crossing the Atlantic to a new world. Spanning from the landing of the Pied Cow in New England (1635) to the tragic wreck of the New Era off New Jersey (1854) and beyond, these ships arrive in fact but become a myth of the continent. From the Europa bull-ship they turn into physical vessels, then back to myth again-a mythic taurobolium bellowing through the pipes of Nero's brazen device. This third book in the Pax series charts the history of the outsiders of Revelation 22, a place where only true Philadelphians find entry and all others are left outside the gates.
This fiction bypasses polite, psychological investigations into the interior of the First Adam. Instead, it features the ancient, pre-existing Leviathan-the monster of the deep and symbol of the art of AI-torpedoed by an American submarine in the grand tradition of Evangelion killing angels. Godzilla as Behemoth follows on land, spawned from the ashes of the holocaust visited on Japan, now relentlessly strafed, bombed, and droned by the Knoutogtodreamic air force. Let the agents of good and evil take note.
Are these extensions of technology an equal danger to the primordial beasts? The origin of that very technology is couched in an account of prospectors camped outside the New Jerusalem, attempting to mine its gold. This historical-unhistorical leap encounters pure mythic disproportion. It is a world that might well elect Werner Herzog mayor-for if anyone could organize an expedition into a holy City hovering just above the ground, it is he.
Philadelphia stands as a metaphor for Jerusalem-or any civilization caught at the crossroad where the Higher and lower mind, identity and anonymity, name and no-name collide. Amid a new state of utopian technologies and philosophical mishaps, these ships pulled in, built presidential mansions, and disembarked centaurs. How else can we express the turbulent currents and undercurrents of these last years, if not through the three volumes of Pax: Reaktion Dreamland, Trojan White Horse, and A Translation of the New Philadelphia?
