The first play, Coriolan, is based on the life of the Roman general Gaius Marcius Coriolanus and his tragic downfall. The second play, Polyxena, is based on the Greek myth of the Trojan War and the sacrifice of Polyxena. The fourth play, Brutus, is based on the life of the Roman senator Marcus Junius Brutus and his role in the assassination of Julius Caesar. The fifth and final play, Wallenstein, is based on the life of the Bohemian general Albrecht von Wallenstein and his tragic end at the hands of the emperor he served.
