Tristia (Sorrows) is a collection of poems in elegiac couplets by the Roman poet Ovid, written in exile on the Black Sea coast at Tomis (modern Constanța, Romania) between 8 and 12 AD. The five books of the Tristia detail Ovid's despair during his exile, as well as his appeals to the Emperor Augustus for a pardon. He describes the hardships of life in Tomis, its remoteness, the climate, and the threat of attack by local tribes. Ovid also wrote the poem Ibis during his exile, a curse poem directed at an unnamed enemy.
