the class Diplopoda, they represent one of the earliest known
land-dwelling animals, with fossil records dating back over 420 million years
to the Silurian period. The earliest known species, Pneumodesmus newmani,
first creatures to breathe atmospheric oxygen-marking a major evolutionary
leap in Earth's biological history.
From a taxonomic perspective, millipedes are arthropods, belonging to the
phylum Arthropoda, subphylum Myriapoda, which also includes centipedes
(Chilopoda), symphylans (Symphyla), and pauropods (Pauropoda). Within
Diplopoda, scientists have identified more than 12,000 described species,
though estimates suggest there may be over 20,000 yet undiscovered species
across the globe.
