李景均先生1912 年出生于天津富商之家，其父李锐曾开办义瑞行，主要经营桐油出口生意，人称桐油大王。李景均中学上的是教会开办的天津新学书院。中学毕业后，考入同是教会开办的南京金陵大学，主修农学。1937 年赴美留学，1940 年获康奈尔大学农学博士学位。1941 年携新婚美籍华人妻子林伯贞回国。回国途中恰逢珍珠港事件，被困香港，经过千辛万苦，才回到抗战时期的自由区广西柳州。先后在广西大学，金陵大学和北京大学任教。1946 年，34 岁时被聘为北京大学农学院农学系主任。1949 年大陆易帜前夕，对新政府充满希望，决定留下来迎接新中国。可惜事与愿违，1949-1950 年间，因坚信孟德尔遗传学而受到李森科伪遗传学派的排挤和打击，1950 年 3 月愤而去国，秘密逃至香港。因办移民身份和找工作的原因，再次滞留香港。被困香港一年多以后，在美国遗传学家和诺贝尔奖得主赫尔曼-穆勒的直接干预和帮助下，于 1951 年 5 月赴美，入职匹兹堡大学公共卫生学院，直至 1982 年 70 岁时荣休。此后，又以荣誉教授之职，继续在匹大从事研究工作，直到 2003 年病逝。李景均先生入职匹大后，学术成就辉煌，著作等身，深受同行和学生爱戴，被公认为是群体遗传学最重要的传播者和推动者之一，1960 年当选美国人类遗传学会主席。1998 年获美国人类遗传学会杰出教育成就奖。
