This essay discusses Isaiah BErlin's essay on positive and negative freedom that was published in 1969. The main argument is that positive and negative liberty are complementary concepts and not antithetic ones, especially in view of the fact that each person tends to have an identity. In other words, political freedom requires both a positive and a negative dimension. I conduct my analysis with specific reference to the civil rights and black power movements.
