Nếu chúng ta có dịp chiêm ngưỡng bộ xương quái vật dinosaur tại viện bảo tà ng Nữu Ước, chiễm chệ nằm vắt ngang đại sảnh đường; chiều dà i hà ng mấy chục mét, chiều cao khoảng 5, 6 mét. Ai cũng trầm trồ về con vật khổng lồ, sống thời xa xưa hà ng chục triệu năm. Nhưng khách thưởng ngọan sà nh điệu đều biết rằng khởi thủy tại nơi khám phá, các nhà khảo cổ chưa phát hiện được bộ xương hòan chỉnh như vậy. Họ có thể tìm thấy đó đây một và i xương rải rác trong bụi rậm, rồi kiên nhẫn đà o bới những xương chìm trong hốc đá, hoặc dưới đầm lầy. Cuộc tìm kiếm kéo dà i lâu ngà y, đến lúc không thể tìm gì hơn được nữa, họ bèn cẩn thận gói xương đưa về kho. Rồi bỏ ra hà ng năm trời nghiên cứu, thử thách; với kiến thức chuyên môn, dùng thêm các vật liệu hóa học giúp ráp nối chắp vá, mới có thể tạo nên được bộ xương dinosaur hoà n chỉnh như vậy.
Người soạn sử cũng là m công việc tương tự, phải thu thập sử liệu từ nhiều nguồn, rồi cẩn thận phối kiểm, chọn lọc, ráp nối. Riêng đối với việc soạn sử Việt, chúng tôi đã sưu tầm được một số sử liệu ngoại quốc đem xuất bản, tạm đặt nhan đề là Lịch sử Việt Nam qua kho tà ng tư liệu nước ngoà i . Tục ngữ ta dạy rằng Trăm nghe không bằng một thấy; bởi vậy trong kho tà ng sử các nước, chúng tôi trân trọng lưu ý đến các sử liệu phát xuất bởi trực tiếp nghe, nhìn do các tác giả cung cấp; rồi sắp xếp theo trình tự thời gian ...
