The present independently readable novel continues Without Mephisto!, the fifth part of my - essentially fictional - Heinrich Heine ennealogy. It is not quite historical. A novel true to history could not penetrate the hindmost dwellings of his blood. Hence, narrative gaps have been filled with how it could have been. My most important work are my memoirs, which won't be published so soon; I'd prefer them to be printed only after my death! They should reveal what's going on behind the scenes, while his poems and works were just like the actors appearing on the foreground stage. I've been working on them for years. The book will have three volumes, at least three volumes. Nobody feels more than me how difficult it is to give something literary that hasn't been there yet, and how unsatisfactory it must be for any deeper spirit, just to please the idle rabble. Few have the courage to say everything ... In this way I avenge myself on the prudish, who like to swallow such stories joyfully and are delighted by them down to the navel, yep, even more deeply, but afterwards scold the narrator and in society turn up their nose at him, and decry him as immoral. It's a good story, delicious as canned pineapple, or like fresh caviary, or like truffles in Burgundy, and it would be a pleasant lesson after the praying hour; but out of resentment, as a punishment for former injury, I'll suppress it. So here's a long dash -- We do not so.
