Berlin, 1921.
He is twenty-one and newly entrusted with the counter at Levy's Pfandleihe on Linienstra e. Each day, objects cross the glass-silver spoons, wedding rings, watches engraved with anniversaries, violins that still carry the scent of rosin. He weighs them carefully against brass standards, writes the ticket, folds it once or twice, and passes it back. The mark still means something. The promise still holds.
Then the paper multiplies.
During the hyperinflation, customers arrive with wheelbarrows of notes that lose value before nightfall. Shelves thin as lives are dismantled item by item. Stabilization follows, but what has been surrendered does not return. Wages freeze. Drawers empty. The arithmetic of survival grows quieter and more exact.
When a pamphlet promising work, bread, and order is left on the counter, Elias reads it as he has read every ticket before him. He folds it once and places it in his pocket. It feels, at last, like something with weight.
Told as a posthumous memoir written from inside a deportation train car, The Weight of Abundance is a restrained and unflinching account of how meaning detaches-from metal to paper, from paper to promise-and how, in the end, even order itself dissolves into smoke.
