The Wife of King Candaules is a novella written by French author Theophile Gautier. The story is set in ancient Greece and revolves around the character of King Candaules, who is so proud of his beautiful wife that he insists on showing her off to his friend, Gyges. However, the queen is outraged by her husband's behavior and seeks revenge. She makes a deal with Gyges that if he agrees to kill the king, she will become his wife. Gyges agrees and kills Candaules, but the queen later regrets her decision and commits suicide. The novella explores themes of jealousy, betrayal, and the consequences of desire. Gautier's writing style is known for its vivid descriptions and attention to detail, making this novella a compelling read for fans of historical fiction and classic literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
