Williamson County, located in middle Tennessee, was created on October 26, 1799 by the Tennessee General Assembly out of a portion of Davidson County. It was named for Dr. Hugh Williamson of North Carolina. The area has been the home of Mississippian mound builders and later the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Shawnee tribes of Native Americans.
