The Spanish Jennet horse is a breed of horse that was common in Spain during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The term Jennet is commonly used to describe a petite, refined horse that moves gracefully. These horses were highly sought after for riding and transporting due to their smooth gaits, ease of control, and comfort.
- The paso llano or paso fino is a four-beat lateral gait that the Spanish Jennet horse was renowned for doing. This gait is particularly smooth and provides a comfortable ride for the rider. The breed was highly sought after by the nobility and royal families for riding and ceremonial purposes due to its agility, beauty, and comfort.
The Spanish Jennet was pivotal in the creation of new horse breeds including the Andalusian and the Peruvian Paso. However, the pure Spanish Jennet horse has mostly vanished over time and is no longer recognized as a breed. There are a number of modern horse breeds that have been affected by the Spanish Jennet and which may still exhibit smooth gaits and beauty.
