極權的形成並沒有明顯的開端。

本書記錄的，是那些在日常生活中逐步累積的改變。一名極具天賦的青年選擇離開，是因為他比他人更早感到制度正在轉向；行政體制開始背離民眾，反而向外尋求認同；有些生命被塑造成道德象徵，另一些生命卻被化為統計資料。日常中的小事--一句被取消的話、一項程序的改變、一個不再被提起的理念--往往比官方聲明更能透露現狀。當資料被視為全部，人就不再追問，而控制正是在這樣的狀態下累積力量。
這個時代的分歧不再是左右，而是個人面對集體與國家權力時能否保有判斷。道德語言被用來支撐權威，以善意為名的行動消耗了他人的同情。我也必須檢視自己的情緒，以免被憤怒奪走判斷。許多地方的經驗早已顯示，當所謂的「公平」被固定成制度時，異議會逐漸被排除。
我從未想過介入他人的生活。但他人開始介入我的。
承認他人的存在是一回事，把價值強加給他人則是另一回事。如果可以相信平等，就必須允許質疑平等。思想受到壓迫後留下的影響不可能完全消失。有些日子，我不得不停筆，因為那些句子已不像是從我心底出來的。與世界爭執之前，人往往要先面對自己。
清晨不再象徵開始。
它成了用華麗詞句掩蓋現實的時刻，也是制度性要求滲入人心最容易成功的時刻。極權不會以劇烈的方式到來，它是在不受注意的情況下逐步形成的。於是留下那個最根本的問題：當思考的自由被奪走，人還能保留多少作為「人」的部分？
