Quand un système totalitaire surgit-il vraiment ?
Ce livre est né de cette question. J'ai vu des idées simples - l'égalité, les droits, la protection - glisser lentement vers une seule direction, réduisant l'espace où l'on peut encore parler et penser. Alors que la plupart dormaient, la liberté se retirait. Des promesses faites au nom de la sécurité et de l'équité sont devenues des règles qui ferment les bouches et étouffent les questions.
La perte de liberté suit partout le même enchaînement. À la première lueur du jour, le droit laisse apparaître ses failles. La responsabilité se déplace sans trouver d'ancrage. le pouvoir se durcit à l'intérieur et affiche un visage conciliant à l'extérieur. Les individus deviennent des chiffres. Leur poids humain s'allège. Le lieu où je vis n'y a pas échappé.
Un jeune homme d'un talent exceptionnel a quitté son pays parce qu'il avait perçu plus tôt que d'autres le basculement qui commençait. Un gouvernement a retourné ses outils de contrôle contre ceux qu'il devait servir, tout en cherchant ailleurs ses appuis. Certaines vies ont été élevées au rang de symbole; d'autres ont été réduites à des données. De petites scènes - un geste banal, une habitude ordinaire, la disparition silencieuse d'un idéal - en disaient plus sur le système que n'importe quel discours officiel. Quand les chiffres recouvrent les faits, les gens acceptent ce qu'on leur donne et cessent de demander pourquoi. C'est dans ce moment suspendu que la domination s'installe.
J'ai seulement défendu ma liberté, et me voici. Aujourd'hui, la véritable ligne de fracture n'oppose plus la gauche et la droite, mais l'individu au pouvoir du collectif ou de l'État. J'ai vu le langage moral devenir un instrument d'autorité. J'ai vu des groupes transformer la bienveillance proclamée en avantage, jusqu'à épuiser la compassion autour d'eux. J'ai dû regarder ma colère en face pour garder ce qui restait de mon jugement. D'autres pays avaient déjà montré comment des règles édictées au nom de l'équité se figent en doctrine et effacent la possibilité de s'en écarter.
Je n'ai jamais voulu intervenir dans la vie d'autrui. Pourtant, on est entré dans l'espace qui m'appartenait. Reconnaître l'existence d'un autre est une chose; imposer une croyance en est une autre. Si l'on peut être libre de croire à l'égalité, on doit pouvoir être libre de la questionner. Je ne me dis pas vertueux. Mais la pression sur la pensée est devenue insoutenable. Certains jours, j'ai cessé d'écrire parce que les phrases ne m'appartenaient plus. Toute lutte contre le monde commence par une lutte contre soi-même.
L'aube n'annonçait plus un jour nouveau. Elle signalait l'heure où des mots de vertu recouvraient tout, et où des règles invisibles frappaient le plus fort. Le contrôle ne surgit pas dans le fracas; il se forme dans les moments que personne ne regarde.
Je reviens alors à la même question:
Que reste-t-il de l'homme lorsque la liberté de penser s'efface ?
