本書糅合東方天人合一之思想與西方邏輯思辨之方法于一體，提出和論證了遞弱代償法則及其系統現象形態：
一、宇宙演運即造成物類衰變，生物進化就導致種系殘弱，文明前行則促進人寰危機。
二、精神增益是載體趨弱的反比變量，信息擴張是物演分化的邊際效應，知識拓展是背離本真的天然尺度。
三、社會結構是自然實體結構的一脉延伸，文明現象是生物智質代償的後續惡果，歷史進步是人類自取禍殃的必由之路。
上述觀點，無不與當前全人類的各種主流意識形態相左，也無不與當前全世界高度文明發展所致的危機形勢（諸如環境污染、資源耗竭、生態破壞、氣候异常、大規模毀滅性武器泛濫以及恐怖主義爭端激化等詭异現實）絲絲相扣。讀罷此作，不能不令人掩卷長思。
故，可視其爲人文存亡之道的基礎理論。
王東嶽，舊日筆名子非魚，自由學者，獨立于任何黨派和學術機構之外。曾爲醫學碩士，但研究生畢業後即脫離醫界；也曾做過西北大學哲學系客座教授以及西安交大管理學院的東方文化客座教授，聊以謀生。迄有著作三卷兩册：三卷《物演通論》合爲一部；一册隨筆集《知魚之樂》；一册彙編本《人類的沒落》。另有一函《哲思講演錄》，似乎不值一哂。此外別無可記。 關于《物演通論》，作者修訂已廿載有餘。全書論證了一個哲學原理，引申出若干异端觀點，應對于如下現實問題：人類生存或人文現象的自然根據是什麽？文明進步及其社會發展爲何必然趨向于岌岌危勢？而精神屬性與知識系統何以終究是于事無補的、甚至不免呈現出負面效應？總之，它用深邃的終極探詢方式，爲傲慢的人類敲響了警鐘，給光明的前途覆蓋以陰霾。 再，本書的哲論筆墨嶙峋奇崛，自成一系，也頗可玩味。
