The Mac Fhlannchaidh sept in County Clare, where they served as lawyers to the O'Briens of Thomond. The Clancy's often rode alongside the Obrien's to battle, composing poems and songs for war and victory, preserving their heritage in the process. Over the years the castle at Knockfinn became a center for Gaelic learning and law.
When English law replaced Brehon law, the Clancy's joined the Irish rebellion. They fought in every rising from 1641 to 1916, earning exile, imprisonment, and death for their troubles. The Clancys preserved Irish culture through its darkest hours, maintaining traditional music and storytelling when such acts were revolutionary. It wasn't long before The Great Famine displaced the clan across to America, Australia, and beyond, with ships leaving from Galway and Cork harbors bound for New York and Boston.
