The Ó Riains were ancient kings of Leinster, establishing their power base and castles in Tipperary. As a consequence of British Reformation, Ryan castles fell to Cromwell's cannons; their lands confiscated for Protestant settlers. The Ryans endured as underground nobility, financing priests and Gaelic culture, and waiting for deliverance. When the Famine struck Tipperary's once-golden fields in 1846-1851, Many Ryans crowded onto ships in Cork and Waterford bound for a new life in Boston or New York.
The Ryan's determination proved successful on the East Coast. They became teachers and politicians, soldiers and political leaders. From Paddy Ryan, heavyweight boxing champion, to Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House, the family maintained influential and powerful roles in their community.
