Ils n'ont pas la foi en eux-mêmes, ils n'ont pas la volonté, faculté souveraine qui remplace et souvent annihile toutes les autres; mais certain penchant vers l'épicuréisme, quelque nonchalance dans l'âme, l'instinct du bonheur, qu'ils savent ne pas devoir rencontrer dans le fracas de la lutte, un scepticisme doux, le scepticisme de Cinéas essayant de dissuader Pyrrhus de conquérir l'univers, tout les détourne des ambitions fortes, les ramène vers un horizon restreint, du moins tranquille...
