La vie théâtrale des comédiens français sous l'ancien régime, les incapacités civiles et religieuses qui pèsent sur eux, les rivalités des grands théâtres, leurs procès contre les troupes foraines, les querelles des acteurs les uns avec les autres, leurs rapports avec les auteurs, le publie et les gentilshommes de la Chambre, ont fait l'objet de mainte étude: ils remplissent les chroniques du XVIIIe siècle, alimentent les conversations autant au moins que la politique étrangère, que les ouvrages de Voltaire, de Montesquieu, de Diderot ou de Jean-Jacques. Le théâtre alors, est, avec l'amour, le souper et la conversation, le plaisir suprême des gens de loisir, à ce point que, vers 1770, on ne comptait pas moins de cent soixante théâtres d'amateurs pour Paris seulement. Pensionnés par le Roi pour se donner au diable, excommuniés s'ils jouent, emprisonnés s'ils refusent de jouer, les comédiens ne rencontrent de tous côtés qu'arbitraire, caprice et préventions injustes...
