L'écrivain Henri de Régnier (1864-1936) effectue deux croisières en Méditerranée, en 1904 et en 1906, qui le mènent notamment en Grèce, à Constantinople et en d'autres régions de l'Empire ottoman. Accompagné de sa femme Marie de Heredia, il rencontre lors de son premier périple Pierre Loti, alors commandant du navire le Vautour stationné au large d'Istanbul. Si Henri de Régnier s'inscrit dans la tradition romantique du voyage en Orient dont il reprend un certain nombre de topoï, il se présente surtout en héritier de Pierre Loti avec lequel il partage vision onirique, ton mélancolique et style poétique. Ses croisières lui inspirent divers textes sur plus de vingt ans: articles de journaux, relations de voyages, poésies, contes, nouvelles et romans, dont cette édition donne un large aperçu. Plus qu'un témoignage fidèle de l'expérience viatique, ces écrits constituent avant tout une méditation littéraire dans laquelle l'imagination se mêle aux réminiscences, travail de recréation qui fait de l'écrivain un véritable ποιητής (poiêtês).
