La relation entre les arts plastiques et les mathématiques est aussi ancienne que les arts plastiques et les mathématiques elles-mêmes. En tant que résultat naturel de ce fait, les mathématiciens et les artistes ont été en contact, ont réalisé des oeuvres collectives et partagé des idées.
Dans cette étude, la sous-structure mathématique des oeuvres de l'artiste graphique néerlandais M.C. Escher est examinée. Les effets mathématiques dans les oeuvres d'Escher peuvent être classés en certains thèmes. Les plus importants peuvent être classés comme la division régulière du plan, les paradoxes visuels et les fictions sur la structure de la perspective et la topologie géométrique. Pour chacun de ces thèmes, on peut dire qu'Escher est influencé par certains noms spécifiques. Les plus importants d'entre eux sont Harold Coxeter, Roger Penrose et Albert Flocon.
Dans la première partie, la relation entre les mathématiques et les arts plastiques en général est examinée. Dans la deuxième partie, la vie et les premières oeuvres de M.C. Escher sont examinées indépendamment des mathématiques. Dans la troisième partie, le côté mathématique des oeuvres d'Escher est étudié sous certains thèmes et en relation avec certains mathématiciens.
