Le système de Londres est un système d'ouverture qui a gagné une popularité notable aussi bien parmi les grands maîtres que parmi les joueurs amateurs ces dernières années. Il existe plusieurs raisons principales à cette situation. La plus importante est probablement que, avec le soutien des programmes informatiques, la théorie des ouvertures est aujourd'hui incroyablement profonde, et les joueurs cherchent des moyens d'échapper à de longues préparations d'ouvertures et à la mémorisation de variations spécifiques. De cette manière, ils peuvent concentrer leur temps et leur énergie de manière plus efficace sur les phases du milieu de partie et de la finale. Le système de Londres est parfait pour cet objectif.
Éliminer le travail fastidieux de l'ouverture n'est pas la seule avantage du système de Londres. Il exerce souvent une pression psychologique sur le joueur qui joue avec les pièces noires en raison de son incapacité à mettre en oeuvre sa propre préparation d'ouverture. Cela est dû au fait que, en réponse à presque toutes les préférences possibles des pièces noires, les pièces blanches peuvent opter pour le système de Londres.
