Artiste symboliste majeur, Odilon Redon (1840-1916) est aussi le peintre des extrêmes émotionnels et du pittoresque. Jusqu'en 1890 environ, il est uniquement réputé pour ses tableaux en noir et blanc. Ces Noirs , dessins au fusain ou lithographies, sont composés d'une sombre palette et peuplés d'inquiétantes formes fantastiques. Peu à peu, l'artiste introduit dans son oeuvre des pastels colorés, s'accompagnant de nouveaux motifs plus légers. Les fleurs deviennent un thème récurrent. Les symboles de la mélancolie cèdent la place à des chevaux et des papillons virevoltants.
Si l'harmonie et le lyrisme tardifs de Redon tranchent nettement avec sa mélancolie première, il garde pour principe directeur: placer le visible au service de l'invisible . À travers son imagerie onirique, ses textures somptueuses et son usage de la couleur, Redon a cherché à créer un équivalent pictural de sa propre psyché. De l'angoisse à la légèreté, il a avant tout été un artiste des états d'âme, qui a considérablement influencé le post-impressionnisme.
