Jusqu'à la fin du 19e siècle, l'oeuvre de jeunesse de Rembrandt a été presque totalement ignorée, voire rejetée. Depuis une vingtaine d'années environ, les historiens d'art commencent à comprendre avec toujours plus d'évidence l'importance de son apprentissage à Leyde puis à Amsterdam. Ces mêmes historiens démystifient l'image d'un génie précoce et soulignent l'importance de cette période formatrice (1625-1631).
Se concentrant sur le regard que porte Rembrandt sur lui-même à travers un de ses premiers autoportraits, l'ouvrage se propose d'établir le bilan de la vie personnelle et artistique du jeune peintre à Leyde et montre l'engouement de ce dernier - dès le début de sa carrière - pour le portrait et l'autoportrait.
