Die Geschichte und Entwicklung der Hirschzucht
Die Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Hirsch reicht Zehntausende von Jahren zurück, in eine Zeit, als die menschlichen Gesellschaften vorwiegend Jäger und Sammler waren und stark auf Wildtiere für Nahrung, Kleidung und zum Überleben angewiesen waren. Archäologische Funde prähistorischer Stätten in Europa, Asien und Nordamerika belegen, dass Hirsche zu den meistgejagten Tieren zählten, da sie vielfältige lebenswichtige Ressourcen lieferten. Ihr Fleisch war eine wichtige Proteinquelle; ihre Felle dienten zur Herstellung von Kleidung, Schuhen und Behausungen; und aus ihren Geweihen und Knochen wurden Werkzeuge und Waffen gefertigt. Diese tiefe Abhängigkeit von Hirschen prägte die menschliche Kultur, Mythologie und Wirtschaft lange bevor die Idee der Domestizierung oder Zucht von Hirschen überhaupt in Betracht gezogen wurde.
Die ersten gezielten Versuche, Hirschpopulationen in kontrollierten Umgebungen zu halten, lassen sich bis ins mittelalterliche Europa zurückverfolgen. In England und anderen Teilen des Kontinents errichteten gro e Adelsgüter Wildparks - umzäunte Gebiete, in denen Hirsche zwar halbwild lebten, aber dennoch innerhalb von Grenzen gehalten wurden. Diese Parks waren keine reinen Bauernhöfe im modernen Sinne; vielmehr vereinten sie Jagdreviere, Nahrungsquellen und Statussymbole. Nur der Adel besa das Recht, Hirsche zu jagen, und die Kontrolle der Herden in den Wildparks sicherte eine stetige Versorgung mit Wildbret für den Hof und Feste. Solche Parks ermöglichten auch die gezielte oder zufällige Zucht und trugen so zur Verfeinerung der Hirschmerkmale über Generationen hinweg bei.
Parallel dazu fanden Entwicklungen in Asien statt. In China und Korea wurden Sikahirsche und andere Wildarten in halbdomestizierten Systemen gehalten, insbesondere zur Gewinnung von Bastgeweihen für medizinische Zwecke. Bauern begannen mit Gehegen, Fütterungsmethoden und selektiver Jagd zu experimentieren, um sowohl die Produktivität als auch die Qualität der Geweihausbeute zu verbessern. Im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert hatten sich diese Praktiken zu rudimentären Formen der Hirschzucht entwickelt, die moderne Methoden vorwegnahmen.
Der Übergang von der naturnahen Haltung zur vollwertigen Hirschzucht erfolgte erst viel später, insbesondere im 20. Jahrhundert. In Neuseeland entwickelte sich die Hirschzucht in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren beinahe zufällig zu einem innovativen Agrarzweig. Eingeführte europäische Rothirsche waren verwildert und galten als Schädlinge, da sie die einheimische Vegetation schädigten. Landwirte begannen, Wildhirsche mit Hubschraubern einzufangen und in umzäunten Weiden zu halten. Was als Schädlingsbekämpfung begann, entwickelte sich zu einem kommerziellen Unternehmen, als die Märkte für Wildbret und Bastgeweihe international expandierten. Neuseeland avancierte schnell zu einem weltweit führenden Land in der Hirschzucht und entwickelte spezialisierte Techniken für Haltung, Zucht, Fütterung und Krankheitsmanagement.
