The God of Vengeance is a play written by Sholem Asch and published in 1918. The play is a three-act drama that tells the story of a Jewish brothel owner, Yankl Tshaptshovitch, who strives to become respectable in the eyes of his community. To do so, he commissions a Torah scroll and marries off his daughter, Rifkele, to a yeshiva student. However, Rifkele falls in love with one of her father's prostitutes, Manke, and the two women begin a romantic relationship. When Yankl discovers their affair, he is outraged and tries to take revenge on Manke. The play explores themes of love, sexuality, and the tension between tradition and modernity in Jewish society. It was controversial for its portrayal of lesbianism and was banned in many countries, but it remains a classic of Yiddish literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
